Poker Quickstart Guide

Objective

Win chips by either:

  • Having the best 5-card hand at showdown, or
  • Getting all opponents to fold their hands.

Setup

  • Players: 2–10
  • Deck: Standard 52-card deck
  • Chips: Used for betting
  • Dealer button: Rotates each hand

Chip Values

White Chip: 1
Blue Chip: 10
Red Chip: 25
Green Chip: 50

Basic Rules

Blinds

  • Before cards are dealt, the two players to the left of the dealer post forced bets:
    • Small Blind (SB): Player directly left of the dealer posts a small bet
    • Big Blind (BB): Next player posts a big bet (minimum double the SB’s bet).
  • The dealer button rotates after each hand to the next player, which also rotates the blinds.

The Deal

  • Each player is dealt 2 private cards (hole cards).
  • Then, 5 community cards are placed face-up in stages:
    1. Flop: 3 cards
    2. Turn: 1 card
    3. River: 1 card

The Betting Rounds

  1. Pre-Flop: After hole cards are dealt
  2. Flop: After first 3 community cards
  3. Turn: After 4th card
  4. River: After 5th card

Actions You Can Take

  • Fold: Discard your hand
  • Check: Pass the action (only if no bet yet)
  • Bet: Place chips into the pot
  • Call: Match a previous bet
  • Raise: Increase the bet
