Frequency Analysis

Frequency analysis is the study of how often a particular character or pattern of characters arises in a given ciphertext. Since languages tend to abide by certain patterns (for example, the most common letter in the English language is "e"), an attacker with sufficient ciphertext may be able to crack a cipher simply by observing such patterns.
